TVECA incorrectly attributes statements made by the Smoke-Free Alternatives Trade Association to V2 CIGS

A recent announcement by Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association (TVECA) mistakenly alleged that V2 CIGS, the internet’s largest electronic cigarette retailer, made medical claims about e-cigarettes contrary to a 2010 federal appeals court ruling. In the same announcement, TVECA incorrectly attributed statements made by the Smoke-Free Alternatives Trade Association (SFATA) to V2 CIGS.

V2 CIGS has requested TVECA to issue a retraction, but TVECA has failed to do so at the time of this publication.

TVECA’s press release relied on video previously removed by V2 Cigs after a federal appeals court found that marketing e-cigarettes for therapeutic purposes would require a different regulatory scheme. Since the ruling, V2 CIGS has removed all materials that could possibly be misinterpreted as making therapeutic claims from all web-sites and advertising collateral under the company’s control, and has attempted to monitor any inappropriate dissemination. The video referenced in TVECA press release was made available online by one of the company’s four thousand independent affiliates. V2 CIGS has contacted this marketer and has requested that the material be removed from the internet immediately. V2 CIGS is very active in enforcing its advertising guidelines and works closely with its affiliates, merchandisers, distributors, and retailers to see that the company’s policies are strictly enforced.

The press release was authored by SFATA and stated that "e-cigarettes do not possess the same chemical and physical characteristics as tobacco products and therefore should not be regulated as such." Misattribution notwithstanding, Ray Story, CEO of TVECA, has agreed with SFATA’s statement. Earlier this year, Mr. Story said "we already know e-cigarettes are much safer than the conventional cigarette because you're not burning it, and you don't have the five or six thousand ingredients in cigarettes, which are mostly dangerous chemicals…[The] ingredients are all FDA approved."
