Iowa Locks Up Arena Bowl Winning Coach Through 2014
DES MOINES – The Iowa Barnstormers of the Arena Football League have agreed to terms with Head Coach Mike Hohensee on a two year contract extension. The deal will keep Hohensee with the Barnstormers for the 2013 and 2014 seasons, where he will continue his duties as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations.
Hohensee was named Head Coach of the Barnstormers on August 16, 2011. In his first year with the team, he coached the franchise to a 7-11 record and a third place finish in the AFL's Midwest Division. However, five of the team's losses were by less than seven points. Iowa fielded one of the youngest rosters in the league and many players had very little experience playing Arena Football, but through all the adversity and growing pains the team never quit.
Hohensee has coached in the AFL for over two decades. He is known best for his 9 year run as Head Coach of the Chicago Rush (2000-10), where he led the team to the playoffs every season, including their Arena Bowl XX championship in 2006. He has also spent time as Head Coach of AFL franchises in Washington, Albany, New England, Anaheim, and Philadelphia. In 18 years as a Head Coach in the AFL, Hohensee's teams have qualified for the playoffs 13 times. On August 10, 2012 he received the highest honor as he was elected into the Arena Football League's Hall of Fame.
"We are very excited to have Mike Hohensee back as our Head Coach for two more seasons", stated Barnstormers Team President Jeff Lamberti. "We were impressed with the team's growth last season and we feel that we are now in position to contend for an Arena Bowl Championship".
With the new deal signed, Hohensee can prepare for the upcoming AFL free agency signing period. Beginning October 15, AFL teams can begin to re-sign their own players for the 2013 season. Open free agency begins for all unsigned players, league-wide on October 29. In addition, Hohensee and the Barnstormers have announced an open tryout for all free agents who are interested in playing Arena Football with the Barnstormers. The tryout will be held on Saturday, November 10 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Full details can be found at www.theiowabarnstormers.com/team/freeagent.
