Thousands of people ran in the Hy-Vee triathlons this weekend.

The triathlon started at Gray's Lake with a 1.5 kilometer swim.

Then athletes had to get out and bike, then they have to get off and run - a total of 51.5 kilometer.

They finished at the Capitol.

Hundreds of people packed the stands to see their friends and family finish the event.

There were two championship races Sunday morning and then the Hy-Vee triathlon which is open to everyone.

That event had around 3100 amateur athletes from across the nation.

Hours from the start of the race, runners were happy for the warm reception waiting.

With locations like Gray's Lake and the State Capitol, Hy-Vee completed their goal of highlighting the beauty of Des Moines.

"The response from the athletes is really gratifying.  They love the race, they love the course.  They like Des Moines.  They said everyone has been so hospitable and they've enjoyed going around the city," says Ruth Comer from Hy-Vee.

The race seems to be getting bigger and bigger.

Hy-Vee officials say around 25,000 people came in to town to participate in the event.
