ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Department of Agriculture says spring planting in the Corn Belt is off to an even slower start than a year ago. Just three percent of the corn crop is in the ground because of the cold weather and soggy ground. But farmers say they still have some time to get the job done. Planting is typically in full swing from late April to late May.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A second day of questioning by Iowa lawmakers about confidential settlement agreements and government hiring practices has been called off because one of the officials being quizzed had a scheduling conflict. The Government Oversight Committee plans to meet again Wednesday with the officials from the Department of Administrative Services.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The Iowa Senate has voted to expand a homestead tax credit for disabled veterans. The proposal would make the tax credit available to disabled vets regardless of income or how they purchased their home. It would also extend the credit to surviving spouses or children.

ELDORA, Iowa (AP) - Seven of the eight juveniles who escaped the Eldora State Training School last week are now back in custody. Two more were caught in Cedar Rapids between Sunday night and Monday afternoon. Five were caught shortly after Thursday's escape. One remains at large.
