DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Republican gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad says he disagrees with a U.S. Supreme Court decision from the 1980s that forced states to enroll children in school even if their parents are in the country illegally.
Branstad made the comment Tuesday during an interview on WHO radio. It came about two weeks after Branstad gave his support to an Arizona-style immigration law, which would require people stopped for traffic violations to prove their citizenship status.
Tim Albrecht, a Branstad spokesman, noted Thursday that the candidate thought the federal government should pay for any crackdown on illegal immigration.
Democratic Gov. Chet Culver's campaign manager, Donn Stanley, says during Branstad's 16 years as governor, he never pressed education officials to challenge the 1982 court decision.
